A highlight of all of our itineraries, therefore, is trekking into the mountains to spend precious time with a troop. This is an experience few ever have the privilege to enjoy, and folks invariably come away with a sense of wonder and a heightened connection to both gorillas and the natural world.

You can fly into Entebbe International Airport (EBB) in Uganda or Kigali International Airport (KGL) in neighbouring Rwanda.
Seasons
To avoid the rains, plan your gorilla trek for sometime between June and September, or between mid December and mid February. That said, know that you'll be trekking in a rainforest, where conditions are never exactly dry! To learn more, please read Best time of year for gorilla trekking.
Visa and Immigration
ParagrYou need to apply for and obtain a tourist visa online before heading to Uganda. Standard tourist visas last for three months. If you're also visiting another nearby country like Rwanda, you might like to obtain an East African visa instead.aph
Health and Safety
It's recommended you have received all of the standard vaccinations before heading to Uganda. You should also carry proof of a yellow fever vaccination if coming from a country that's a known hotspot.
East Africa is a malaria zone, so you may wish to consider taking anti-malaria medication. And it's always a good idea to be vaccinated against rabies, especially when travelling anywhere rural.

While it’s always wise to stay aware and take normal travel precautions, Uganda is generally safe for travellers and offers incredible experiences well worth the visit.
Uganda has become safer in recent years, with significant improvements in peace and security across the country. The Global Peace Index 2025 says it recorded the largest improvement in peacefulness in the region.
Is gorilla trekking safe?
Yes, gorilla trekking is generally safe. Wild mountain gorillas are not dangerous as long as they feel calm and unthreatened. While they are strong and dominant animals, they are also gentle and shy by nature. You will always trek with an experienced guide who will ensure your safety by advising you where to stand and how to behave around these majestic creatures.

When is the best time to go gorilla trekking?
The best time to go gorilla trekking is during the dry seasons, which run from June to September and from mid-December to mid-February. These months offer better conditions to trek, with less rain and drier forest trails.
What gear do I need for gorilla trekking?
You get very dirty on a gorilla trek. This is because you're hiking through a rainforest, and it's often muddy. We recommend bringing water-resistant hiking boots, long pants, and even gaiters. Why is gorilla trekking so expensive?
Gorilla trekking isn’t cheap, mainly because the permits are costly, and for good reason. Most of the fee goes directly towards gorilla conservation. In Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, for example, 75% of your permit fee supports conservation efforts, 15% goes to the government, and 10% benefits local communities whose ancestral land now forms part of the protected park.

Where in Uganda can I see mountain gorillas?
You can see mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both parks offer incredible trekking experiences to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Bwindi is the most popular spot, known for its dense forest and large gorilla families.
