Yes, Sri Lanka is generally considered safe for tourists, and it continues to be a popular destination thanks to its friendly people, natural beauty, and rich culture. According to the 2025 Global Peace Index, Sri Lanka ranks the third safest country in South Asia, with a score of 2.075, reflecting ongoing stability and improvements in peace and security.
That said, as with any international travel, it’s wise to stay informed and take basic precautions. We recommend checking official travel advisories, staying up to date with local guidance, and being mindful in busy areas, especially when it comes to carrying valuables or using ATMs. While serious incidents are rare, it’s always best to travel with awareness and care.
The official currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Notes come in denominations ranging from Rs. 20 to Rs. 5,000, and coins are also in circulation. You’ll find ATMs in most towns and cities, and credit cards are accepted at many hotels and restaurants, though cash is essential for local markets and smaller businesses. It’s best to exchange money at authorised counters, banks, or reputable hotels, and to carry some small notes for day-to-day expenses like tuk-tuks, snacks, or tipping.
It depends on where you’re headed, as Sri Lanka is influenced by two separate monsoon seasons. The best overall time to visit is from December to March, especially if you're exploring the south and west coasts or the hill country. During these months, you’ll enjoy plenty of sunshine and relatively low rainfall, ideal for beach days and scenic train rides.
Keep in mind this is also peak tourist season, so prices are higher and popular spots can be busy. That said, you can visit Sri Lanka any time of year, but thanks to its tropical climate, the weather can vary between regions; you might be soaking up the sun on one coast while it’s raining on the other.
