Can you see the Big Five in Uganda?

Yes, you can! Uganda is one of the few countries in Africa where you can see all members of the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino. While lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo roam freely in national parks like Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Kidepo Valley, the black rhino can be seen at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This is the only place in Uganda where rhinos have been successfully reintroduced through conservation efforts.

Pairing Big Five game viewing with gorilla and chimpanzee trekking makes Uganda one of the most exciting and diverse safari destinations on the continent.

Why is Uganda called the Pearl of Africa?

Uganda earned the nickname "Pearl of Africa" because of its stunning natural beauty and incredible wildlife. From lush forests and vast lakes to majestic mountains and diverse animals, the country truly shines like a gem in East Africa. The phrase was popularised by Winston Churchill, who was amazed by Uganda’s rich landscapes and warm people.

How much does gorilla trekking cost?

As of now, a one-hour gorilla trekking permit costs US$800 per person in Uganda and US$1,500 in Rwanda. If you’re after a longer, more immersive experience, you can opt for the four-hour gorilla habituation trek in Uganda’s Bwindi Forest, which also costs US$1,500.

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter and worth every penny, but please note prices might change year to year.
