Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain day hike

1
days
High in the Andes is a mountain range with rainbow-coloured streaks that seems to come from a storybook. Go on a challenging high-altitude hike to the summit in the invigorating mountain air, stopping en route to pet llamas and alpacas dressed in bright accessories by their owners. Do NOT forget your camera!

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Climb picture-perfect Rainbow Mountain

Your guide will pick you up early for a three-hour drive inland to Rainbow Mountain, known locally as Vinicunca or the 'coloured mountain'. As you get closer, the vibrant, rainbow-like stripes of the peak come into view. The trek starts at the crater lakes and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the summit, depending on your pace. The altitude is high at 5,040m (16,535 ft), so take it slow. The descent is a bit easier, usually taking 1 to 1.5 hours. In total, expect about 3 to 4 hours of trekking. Horses are available for rent at the trailhead if you prefer assistance, and prices will vary. When you are at the summit, take in the panoramic views and capture photos of the alpacas and llamas before making your way back down. Depending on the time, you will enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant or get a packed lunch before the drive back to Cusco.
