Best of Lima – cuisine and history tour

3
days
Almost everyone flying in and out of Peru makes their way through Lima. In our opinion, the perfect way to relax after a big trek in the Andes is a short stopover in the capital to taste some of it's world-renowned cuisine as well as stroll its lovely clifftop walkway and visit some iconic historical sights.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Clifftop walking tour

Your Lima guide meets you at the airport and whisks you away for a guided afternoon or evening walking tour. This includes strolling along the Miraflores section of the picturesque Malecón Walkway, a pedestrian path that winds along the clifftop running parallel to the ocean. This walkway passes through green parks with photo-worthy modern sculptures and also offers great views of the sun as it sets over the ocean. Later, head to dinner at one of the city's many incredible restaurants. Did you know that Lima actually has four of the world's 50 best restaurants? Let us know if you'd like us to try book you a table at one of them!

Day 2: Market tour and cooking class

Today we visit a local market and learn about the common ingredients in Limeño cuisine such as tomatoes, potatoes, chillies and peanuts, all of which actually originated in Peru. This tour does of course involve tasting many local and delicious ingredients! Later in the day it's off to a cooking class to learn how to make three Peruvian classics: causa limena (an ancient savoury dish with mashed potato), ceviche (a marinated dish of raw fish) and pisco sour (Peru's most well-known cocktail). After dark, we visit the city's popular fountain park for a bit of magic, and then enjoy another delicious dinner out trying something traditional or one of the city's many popular fusion dishes.

Day 3: Historical Lima tour

This morning we enjoy a half-day walking tour of key spots within Lima's historic centre, which is a UNESCO heritage site. The city's history has various layers going back millennia – in fact, it's near Lima that archaeologists found evidence of the very first South American civilisation! Our tour today includes a visit to the C16th Plaza de Armas, which the Spanish conquistadores symbolically built atop the ruins of the palace of the Inca. We also enjoy a guided tour of the fascinating Basilica and Convent of San Francisco and its extensive catacombs, after which your guide drives you to the airport for your flight home.
