FAQs

What sort of accommodation will I have in Bhutan?

Most of our Bhutan trips include comfortable 4-star hotels. The exception is the Paro and Jomolhari treks, where you'll stay in a 3-star hotel due to the remoteness.

During the trek, you’ll camp. A mountain crew handles all the setup, cooking, and cleaning, and there's a private chemical toilet tent just for your group.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance for Bhutan?

While travel insurance is no longer a mandatory requirement for obtaining a Bhutan visa, the Department of Tourism strongly encourages all travellers to take out a policy before arriving. It’s a smart precaution, ensuring you’re covered for any unexpected hiccups, from medical emergencies to travel delays, that can come with international adventures.

What language do they speak in Bhutan?

The official language of Bhutan is Dzongkha, a unique language with Tibetan roots that’s spoken across much of the country. However, Bhutan is home to many regional dialects and languages, reflecting its rich cultural diversity, especially in remote villages.

English is widely taught in schools and used in government and tourism, so travellers usually find it easy to communicate with guides, hotel staff, and many locals involved in the travel industry.

What is the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) in Bhutan?

The Sustainable Development Fee, or SDF, is a daily charge paid by all visitors on a tourist visa. Introduced to support Bhutan’s growth and preserve its unique culture and environment, the SDF helps manage visitor numbers to keep tourism sustainable. Bhutan's stance on tourism is defined by its "high-value, low-volume" approach, prioritising sustainability and cultural preservation over mass tourism.
